• Other registration standards: All applicants must still meet applicable NMBA registration standards, including English language skills, recency of practice, criminal history and professional indemnity insurance arrangements.

For a nurse who trained and worked only in India/Kerala, a streamlined pathway should not be assumed. Complete Ahpra's Self-check and follow the pathway assigned to your qualification and registration history. Do not rely on a simple rule such as “degree after 2017 = fast track”.

B. Existing IQNM Assessment Process - including Stream B (OBA)

For RN registration, the NMBA assesses whether the applicant's nursing qualification meets the relevant qualification criteria, including the required academic level. Always rely on the Self-check and subsequent Ahpra assessment for your individual pathway.

1. Self-Check, IQNM Account & Orientation Part 1

The Nursing Council of New Zealand now uses a competence-assessment process for internationally qualified nurses where required, including theoretical assessment and an in-person OSCE in Christchurch for candidates directed to that process. Nurses who already hold current Australian or New Zealand nursing registration may be eligible for ANMAC's Modified Skills Assessment. ANMAC assessment is for migration purposes; it does not itself authorise you to practise nursing in Australia.

Am I automatically eligible for a streamlined AHPRA/NMBA pathway if I trained in India?

No. The streamlined IQRN registration standard is for eligible registered nurses who meet the NMBA's detailed requirements relating to registration and practice in approved comparable international jurisdictions, including at least 1,800 hours of RN practice since 1 January 2017. An India/Kerala qualification or a post-2017 graduation date by itself does not guarantee streamlined eligibility.

Do I need to sit NCLEX-RN and OSCE if I apply directly from Kerala?

Do not assume the outcome before completing Self-check. Many India-trained RN applicants who do not meet a streamlined pathway are assessed through the existing IQNM process. Applicants placed in Stream B complete the OBA, which includes the NCLEX-RN MCQ examination and the NMBA OSCE.

Where is the Australian RN OSCE held?

The NMBA RN OSCE is delivered in person in Australia at Adelaide Health Simulation in Adelaide, South Australia, and at the RANZCOG assessment centre in Melbourne, Victoria. Candidates must travel to Australia for the OSCE.

Is the New Zealand route automatically a shortcut into Australian nursing registration?

No. New Zealand has its own registration and competence-assessment requirements for internationally qualified nurses, including an in-person OSCE in Christchurch for candidates directed to that process. Nurses who already hold New Zealand registration should check the current Australian TTMRA requirements, but using New Zealand only as an intermediate step can add cost and time.

What's the difference between Ahpra/NMBA and ANMAC?

The NMBA sets the registration requirements for nurses and Ahpra administers the registration process. ANMAC conducts migration skills assessments where required for relevant migration pathways. An ANMAC assessment does not itself authorise a person to practise nursing in Australia.

Can I combine two English test attempts?

Potentially, yes. National Boards can accept results from a maximum of two sittings within a 12-month period, but each accepted test has specific minimum floor scores for the individual sittings. Results from different test providers cannot be combined. Check Ahpra's current score table for your test and test dates.

What English scores apply if I test in 2026?

Ahpra changed the minimum accepted English-test scores from 23 April 2026. Tests taken on or after that date use the current score table, while tests taken on or before 22 April 2026 may fall under the transition arrangements.
