1. Start with the occupation, not a visa promise
A common mistake is selecting a course purely because it currently appears on a skilled migration list. The reality is that graduation does not guarantee a visa. Independent migration is highly competitive, and state nominations change rapidly based on government quotas. Instead, focus on building a genuine career in high-demand sectors like Aged Care or skilled Trades, where employer sponsorship can provide a more direct pathway.
2. Aged Care pathway
The Australian Government has introduced the Aged Care Industry Labour Agreement, which gives eligible employers a more accessible route to sponsor international workers in the sector. Employers who have signed an MoU with relevant industry unions (like the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation or Health Services Union) can sponsor you for a Subclass 482 visa without requiring post-qualification work experience.
Eligible Occupations
- Nursing Support Worker
- Personal Care Assistant (PCA)
- Aged or Disabled Carer
Qualifications and Work Experience
You do not need years of post-qualification experience for the 482 visa under this agreement. You only need:
- An Australian AQF Certificate III (such as the Certificate III in Individual Support - Ageing) OR
- At least 12 months of relevant work experience (or part-time equivalent)
Note: To complete a Certificate III in Individual Support in Australia, you must complete a minimum of 120 hours of vocational placement. Placement providers may also require checks or qualifications such as a National Police Check, an NDIS Worker Screening check for relevant NDIS roles, and First Aid. Requirements vary by provider, role and jurisdiction, so confirm them before enrolling or beginning placement.
The Pathway to PR
The Aged Care Industry Labour Agreement can provide an employer-nominated pathway to the Employer Nomination Scheme (Subclass 186), but nomination and visa approval are not automatic. The current agreement requires at least two years of relevant Australian work experience in a direct-care occupation; that experience is not tied to one employer or visa subclass. It also specifies an IELTS proficiency level of 5.5 or equivalent, with no minimum component score, and a salary of at least $51,222 AUD per year (the figure published in the agreement at the time of writing, which may be indexed) or the Australian Market Salary Rate for the role, whichever is higher. Always confirm the current requirements before relying on this pathway.
3. Trades pathway
Skilled trades offer some of the most stable career opportunities in Australia, provided you pass your Migration Skills Assessment (MSA) with Trades Recognition Australia (TRA).
Migration Skills Assessment (MSA) Requirements
TRA uses a documentary-based assessment to confirm you meet Australian standards. To pass, you must demonstrate:
- Work Experience: generally 3 years of full-time (38 hours per week) or equivalent part-time relevant employment, although requirements can vary by occupation and pathway.
- Recent Currency: At least 12 months of this employment must have occurred within the last 3 years.
- Document Strictness: Upload clear, complete scans of your original documents and follow TRA's current file-format and file-size requirements in the applicant guidelines.
Proving Your Income
TRA requires verifiable pay evidence. For ordinary employment, provide at least two sources for each employment period, such as tax records, payslips, superannuation documents or bank statements showing wage deposits. Different evidence rules apply to self-employment, including additional evidence for overseas self-employment, so follow the current MSA applicant guidelines for your circumstances.
Important 2025/2026 Update: If your assessment is refused, TRA's updated Assessment Review Policy strictly gives you 28 calendar days from the date of your assessment outcome to request a review.
4. Employer sponsorship and labour agreements
For both aged care and trades, employer sponsorship may be one possible migration pathway when your occupation, qualifications, experience, employer and visa eligibility align. Sponsorship, nomination and visa approval are not guaranteed, so compare this option with other pathways and verify the current rules.
5. A safer decision checklist
- Is there genuine demand? Research job sites to see if employers are actively hiring and struggling to find local workers for your occupation.
- Can you get the licence? Check what state-specific licences or registrations are required before you can legally perform the work.
- Do you meet the assessment criteria? For trades, read the current TRA applicant guidelines thoroughly. For aged care roles, read the current Home Affairs labour agreement terms. Make sure you can provide the exact pay evidence and experience documents required.
- Are you prepared for the physical demands? Both trades and aged care roles require being on your feet for extended periods and dealing with the physical demands of manual tasks.
